Lately, people have been criticizing Facebook for brazenly copying from Twitter and messing up the News Feed, Chat and other features. While the introduction of new privacy setting is well appreciated, some of the recent the changes have not been welcomed by most of the users. From beginning, the irrefutable face of Facebook is its simplicity and the streamlined design that is easy to deal with. Though the recent modification in Facebook is not that impressive, the social media giant’s ability to recognize the trends and instinctive urge to test different concepts always lead to new innovations.
Introduction of Open Graph was one unique Facebook thought that ultimately boosted the social sharing in the web. Recently, at the F8 developer conference, Facebook prefaced a redesigned Open Graph along with an integrated profile theme called Timeline. The Facebook Timeline is intended to drive more user engagement in the site and to allow developers take advantage of it. The Timeline is just a user diary where he/ she can put their memories or life events in an order. There is an option to go back to the past and add photos, videos and other unforgettable stuff. So when someone looks at a Facebook timeline, they get a rough idea about the persons life history in just a few minutes. The Facebook Timeline is presently in a limited test phase and only available for developers. However, if you could spare a little time, there is an alternate method to get this working on your profile.
Upgrade to new Facebook profile
Facebook has endued developers with timeline profile so that they can make their apps compatible with new Open Graph. So the idea is, when you create an app with a developer account, the timeline gets activated on your profile. Here is how to do that.
Open your Facebook Profile and locate the Developer app using the search box at the top.
Once you select the app it will demand consent for retrieving your profile settings and other details. Click Allow-it will take you to the Facebook Developer page.
In next page, you can customize the basic settings of the newly created Facebook app. Leave everything as it is and click on the Save Changes button at the bottom.
Now click on Open Graph link given in the left pane. Here, you can configure the Open Graph properties related to the actions initiated by your Facebook app in design. We just need to activate the Timeline profile so enter anything that you prefer and hit the Get Started button. That’s it- you’ve upgraded your account for the new timeline theme. Go to your Facebook profile, and you’ll find something like as given below.
Click on the “Get It Now” button and make needed alterations to the design and orientation of posts in the Timeline feed appearing below. Then publish the Timeline before the changes go live on your Facebook profile. At present, in the developer mode, it’s possible to downgrade/remove Facebook timeline and go back to the old profile theme by deleting the newly created app. Refer to the third image (given above) to delete Timeline app.
Is it possible to downgrade from Facebook Timeline?
No you can’t. Facebook has already rolled-out timeline profile to all accounts as of January 2012. Now it is not feasible to downgrade from Timeline. However, you can hide the timeline view in your browser, just for you. Facebook has admitted that the Timeline doesn’t support Internet Explorer 7.0. So if you’re using Internet explorer 7 in Windows, you’ll not be able to view the Timeline profile. There are Addons and settings in new-age browsers that let you spoof the user agent string to that of the IE 7.0. Once you install any of these Addons and change the user agent string, it will appear to the web server that you’re using IE 7.0, and the timeline view will be deactivated.
Firefox users: From top tabs, click on Tools and open Addons panel. Search and install “User Agent Switcher” Addon-then restart the browser. Now you’ll find a new option “Default user Agent” in Tools menu. Select Internet Explorer 7.0 as the user agent and login into your Facebook profile page. You won’t find the Timeline view anymore, but the modification is only limited to your web browser, and the standard profile will be visible to normal users. Similar Addons are also available for Chrome, Safari, etc. check the respective browser pages to find a suitable one.
