Hyundai India sold approximately 35000 passenger cars in September 2011. Amid the concerns in Manesar plant, Maruti Suzuki retailed 65000 cars in the same period. When you asses the Maruti sales chart you can see that the most moving car segment for them is 800 cc, which includes Alto and legendary Maruti 800. Recently, they have upgraded Alto with Kseries engine and since then the model is selling like hot cakes. Hyundai is here in India from the last 15 years, but they didn’t have a solid performer in the 800 cc category. Then there is Santro, which is actually an 1000 cc car with outdated tall boy design. Oh wait, something big is coming your way.
Are you getting it? It’s the new Hyundai EON that has been launched in the last week. Hyundai’s small car project for India was in the news for fairly some time now. Earlier, the car had been called HM800 and was seen testing in various parts of the country. EON means an uncertain long time. Yes, it took much time to build this car but the outcome is considerably pleasing. The Hyundai EON is a great package; it has a good design, aggressive pricing and class leading features.
Hyundai EON styling: I visited the local Hyundai showroom here in Kerala and got a quick opportunity to take some real photos of the car, given above and below.
Hyundai’s design ideology has ameliorated a lot in the recent years. And it is evident the photo that they have pursued their popular fluidic design concept while designing EON. I own a Hyundai i20 and while settling on the car something took my attention is the aerodynamic design with striking curves in the sides, chromish front grille and the sporty headlamps. EON is nothing like i20 or Verna but Hyundai has implemented their best here too. The styling is very impressive that it’s going to be a tough time for Maruti Alto, Chevrolet Spark, and other cars in this price range. In photos, the EON looks slightly similar to the new Hyundai i10, but a closer look unveils more details. It’s a lightweight car and therefore, external build quality is just about average. An integrated spoiler and chrome plated front grille is found in all EON models. Body colored bumper, door handles, outside mirrors, fog lamps, and the roof antenna are a few variant dependent external features in EON.
Hyundai EON internals: The interior of the Hyundai EON is equally praiseworthy as like the exteriors. It has got a dual tone black-beige color scheme broadly comparable to that in i20 and Hyundai Verna Fluidic. The car looks rather small from outside view but the inner space, specifically the rear-side head room and leg room is more than enough for even a 6 feet guy.
EON comes with a lot of storage spaces and has the segment leading boot space. Steering wheel, front controls, and digital display options impart a premium outlook for this car in the entry-level segment it belongs to. One thing I feel bad about this car is the gear knob and its operation. The gear box in EON is not of a good design, the shifting is not easy and the lever keeps on vibrating at times. Apart from this, my impartial assessment on EON is all positive. The light and responsive steering wheel and small turning radius are really beneficial in city driving. Features like internally adjustable rear-view mirror, key-less entry, gear-shift indicator, driver-side air bag, etc. are pretty new in this segment. Hyundai EON will be available in six variants; D-Lite, D-Lite (o), Era, Magna, Magna (o) and Sportz, and their difference is given in the official brochure here. The EON is slightly inferior to Maruti Alto K10 and Chevrolet Spark when you equate the engine power. It’s a three cylinder 800cc, SOHC engine that controls EON, and it outputs only 55.23 HP of power. Still, the lightweight and aerodynamic construction of the engine and parts makes it more fuel efficient (21.1 kmpl), and is visually and practically more attractive than the age-old competitors.
Hyundai EON On Road price
Hyundai EON will be available in six colors, out of which the price of the white color model is around 1800 INR less than others. When you add govt. tax and insurance to the ex-showroom price of EON, you get the on-road price, and the latest rate in Kerala is given below.
